Detective Greg Ferency, a 30-year veteran with the Terre Haute Police Department, was shot and killed yesterday while on duty at a federal building in Vigo County, Indiana.

Authorities responded to reports of an officer down at the building on 1st Street, behind the Vigo County Courthouse. State Police Sgt. Matt Ames confirmed around 4 p.m. that the officer died.  ~ MSN

By 7:30 p.m., the Terre Haute Police Department posted the following statement to their Facebook page:

Detective Greg Ferency, a 30-year Veteran with the Terre Haute Police Department was shot and killed today in the line of duty. Detective Ferency was assigned to the FBI Taskforce on behalf of the Terre Haute Police Department. The FBI is leading this investigation. Please keep the Ferency family in your prayers. Thank you for all of the kind emails, posts, and calls. It is truly appreciated.

Sgt. Ames also said that authorities “believe they have the suspect in custody.”  Because the shooting occurred at a federal building, the FBI has taken the lead in the criminal investigation which is currently underway.

According to The Star Tribune, Ferency had been a federal task force officer since 2010, the FBI said in a statement.

“An FBI agent shot and wounded the suspect who is currently in custody receiving medical attention at a local hospital,” the FBI said in a statement late Wednesday that also indicated Ferency was “ambushed” at the FBI Indianapolis Resident Agency.

MSN released a statement delivered last night around 8 p.m. by Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb, who characterized Ferency’s shooting as “tragic” and ‘senseless.”

“Our heart breaks for Detective Greg Ferency’s family, loved ones and those who served with him every day protecting the residents of the Wabash Valley.  Janet and I are thinking of the Terre Haute Police Department, the community and Detective Ferency’s family as I know they will be steadfast in honoring his life, service and dedication to the residents of Vigo County.”

After being shot and wounded by the FBI, Ferency’s still unidentified shooter needed to undergo surgery at Terre Haute’s Regional Hospital.  We won’t know the suspect’s name until charges are filed.
