A 22-year-old Slovenian woman, obviously desperate for a big pay day, used an electric circular saw to cut off her own left hand in an attempted insurance scam.  She was hoping to net $1.2 million in claims from five separate insurance policies but was ultimately found guilty of insurance fraud and sentenced to three years behind bars.

Julija Adlesic, reportedly collaborated with her boyfriend to saw off her hand in the Slovenian capital of  of Ljubljana early last year.  Her father was also in on the ruse.  The boyfriend ended up being sentenced to three years in prison while the despicable dad only received a one-year suspended sentence, according to Sky News.

After the “accident,” the boyfriend took Adlesic to the hospital where the story they concocted was that she lost her hand while sawing up some tree branches at home.  They also conveniently left the severed hand at the accident scene instead of bringing it with them to the hospital.

The day before the sawing event, Adlesic’s boyfriend performed an Internet search and researched how prosthetic hands worked, which prosecutors said was further evidence that the hand removal had been deliberate.

Prosecutors claimed that the couple left the hand behind when they went to the hospital to ensure the injury was permanent, but Adlesic’s hand was recovered and reattached.  ~ MSN

All throughout the trial, Adlesic continued to declare her innocence and vehemently denied purposefully sawing off her own hand.

The Business Insider quoted her as saying, “No one wants to be crippled. My youth has been destroyed. I lost my hand at the age of 20. Only I know how it happened.”
