Woman charged with shooting and killing pit bull pup for chewing up her things
Sheriff’s deputies in Cantonment, Florida, received a concerned telephone call from a trailer park resident in the 2000 block of Ryale Road with the caller saying that she heard two gunshots, the sounds of a dog crying, another gunshot – and then silence. When the caller looked outside her trailer, she said she saw her neighbor, 27-year-old Amanda Cay Carpenter, holding a gun. On December 29, deputies with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office went to Carpenter’s home, arrested her, and charged her with animal cruelty and firing a weapon in public, according to a report from The Pensacola News Journal.
Police say that the shooting took place around 10:30 p.m. on December 15. During the course of the investigation, Carpenter told officials that she basically shot and killed her pup because the animal was misbehaving. She said that the nine-month-old pit bull “chewed up and damaged several items in her room,” according to ABC News affiliate Wear-TV3. She also said that she tried disciplining her pup by placing it in its kennel – but that her pet would not cooperate and wouldn’t get in the kennel.
Carpenter said when she grabbed the dog, it unsuccessfully tried to bite her face. Her next statements are redacted, but the document alleges Carpenter took the dog outside and shot it multiple times with a .22 caliber rifle. The shots were reportedly fired in the direction of another trailer that was less than 40 feet away. ~ The Pensacola News Journal
Investigators questioned Carpenter as to why when the dog misbehaved she just didn’t contain the puppy in her yard and contact animal control? Police reports state that Carpenter could not provide an answer to that question. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that Carpenter is currently being held in Escambia County Jail on $20,000 bond.
