Rolling Stones release video tribute to fallen bandmate, Charlie Watts
Known as the “heartbeat” of iconic rock band, the Rolling Stones, Charlie Watts, the drummer for that 60s English Invasion rock band, died on August 24 at the tender age of 80. No cause of death was provided at the time. We knew that Charlie had to pass on some recent tour dates with the Stones; but we did not know the seriousness of whatever illness caused him to have sit out from those dates.
Rolling Stone Magazine shared a statement from Charles Robert Watts’ publicist:
“It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts. He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier [Tuesday] surrounded by his family.”
The statement referred to Watts as “one of the greatest drummers of his generation” and closed by requesting that “the privacy of his family, band members, and close friends is respected at this difficult time.”
Tributes poured in on Twitter from musicians, celebrities, and fans from around the world. Ringo also payed tribute to the Stones’ drummer.
Charlie was one of the core members of the Rolling Stones and provided “the groove” for the band dating back to 1963 until his recent and surprising passing. Charlie, along with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were the only band members to play on all of the Stones’ studio albums.
On Friday, the Rolling Stones posted a two-minute video tribute to Charlie Watts on their official Twitter account. Jagger and Richards also posted the video on their individual Twitter accounts.
