CHP: Drunken man arrested riding horse down 91 Freeway in California
The Santa Fe Springs division of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said that arresting a drunk riding a horse down one of their busy highways isn’t the strangest thing the department has ever seen; but it comes close. Early in the morning on February 24, an inebriated individual was celebrating his 29th birthday and was arrested for riding his horse along the 91 Freeway in Long Beach. NBC News in Los Angeles reports that a 9-1-1 call came in shortly after 1 a.m. on Saturday morning to say that there was a man “riding a white horse on the eastbound 91 Freeway from Paramount Boulevard to Downey Avenue.”
When CHP arrived on the scene, the horse had “galloped off the freeway and across the Bellflower city limits.”
Police arrested the drunken equestrian, identified as Luis Alfredo Perez of Placentia, after Perez failed a field sobriety test. CHP Santa Fe Springs shared several photos and tweets of the DUI arrest.
Some of those tweets read:
“The California Highway Patrol does not “horse” around when it comes to DUI”
“No, you may not ride your horse on the freeway, and certainly not while intoxicated”
“Don’t put yourself, your beautiful animal, or others in danger of being killed in traffic”
“Just when you think you’ve seen and heard it all … you haven’t” ~ per The Ocean County Register
Perez’s mother arrived on the scene during her son’s arrest to take custody of the horse. Police reported that no-one, including the horse, was harmed during Perez’s late-night ride. Perez was booked into the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department jail in Lakewood and charged with driving under the influence on a horse. His bail was set at $10,000.
