Deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) responded to a home in the 13000 block Graham Yarden Drive in Riverview, Florida, on Wednesday morning, May 18, after 64-year-old Thomas Schultz called 911 saying “we are in an impossible situation with no way out,” and that he was planning to commit suicide.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they found Schultz dead on his back porch from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

His wife and adult stepdaughter were also found shot and killed in their beds inside the home. The daughter was in a hospital-style bed and appeared to be connected to a feeding tube.

According to relatives, both Schultz’s wife and stepdaughter were suffering from terminal illnesses.

None of the individuals involved have criminal histories, and there were no prior calls for service to the home. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating.

“There is no such thing as an ‘impossible situation.’ There is always hope, and there is always help,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “This tragedy has occurred during the month of May, Mental Health Awareness Month.
