A man who was dog sitting four pit bulls at his Minnesota home ended up being mauled by the animals in his backyard and died from his injuries. The victim of the dog attack was identified as 22-year-old Dezmond R. Thomas Trawick.
On the afternoon of April 13, officers with the Brooklyn Center Police Department in Minnesota responded to a report of a dog attack going down near the 5700 block of Halifax Ave N.
When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered four dogs actively mauling Trawick in the backyard of his home. Police deployed a non-lethal round, striking at least one of the dogs, which dispersed all of the dogs back into the house. Officers were then able to secure a garage door and begin to render aid to the victim.
Police said that Trawick had most of his clothing ripped off and had extensive bites over the majority of his body, and that he had to be intubated at the scene and then transported to a local area hospital where he was immediately brought into surgery. At the time, police believed that Trawick would have to be hospitalized for an extended period of time, possibly several weeks, but were hopeful that he would make a complete recovery.
Unfortunately – that was not to be the case.
On April 15, The Associated Press reported that the victim, identified as 22-year-old Dezmond R. Thomas Trawick, suffered extensive wounds over most of his body and died from those injuries about an hour after being transported to the hospital.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office on Friday said the preliminary finding is that the death was an accident, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported. Brooklyn Center Police Department Cmdr. Tony Gruenig said the dogs lived elsewhere and belonged to Thomas Trawick’s brother. Thomas Trawick was watching the dogs for the day when he was attacked. ~ WSAZ
Police could not explain what led to the man being attacked by the four dogs. There were no other humans at the home during the deadly attack.
All of the dogs were transported to PUPS, an animal holding facility in Maple Grove. They were quarantined and scheduled to undergo a dangerous dog evaluation before their future is determined, according to U.S. News.
A GoFundMe page has been established in Trawick’s name.
