Nikki Haley’s surprise cameo on SNL questioning Donald Trump in a town hall meeting (Video)
If Nikki Haley ever decides to leave the political arena, she could easily segue her way into sketch comedy based on the surprise cameo appearance she made last night on the February 3 showing of “Saturday Night Live.” The former South Carolina Governor and U.N. Ambassador, who is still in the running for the 2024 presidential nomination versus Donald Trump, appeared in last night’s SNL cold open where she stood up in a mock town hall meeting as a concerned voter from her place in the audience, and asked questions of and traded barbs with Trump, who was portrayed once again by James Austin Johnson.
The hilarious sketch featured SNL regulars as hosts of CNN’s “King Charles,” moderating the town hall with the former president.
Some memorable sketch highlights:
As a “concerned South Carolina voter,” Nikki Haley asked Trump, “Why won’t you debate Nikki Haley?” Johnson’s Trump replied, “Oh my God! It’s her, the woman who was in charge of security on January 6th. It’s Pelosi.” A playful jab at a real Trump gaffe where he mistook his main GOP rival for former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Nikki continued needling Trump: “Are you doing OK, Donald? You might need a mental competency test.” Trump defensively claimed he aced the test, adding, “That’s why a woman never should run our economy. Women are terrible with money. In fact, a woman I know recently asked me for $83.3 million.” To which Nikki retorted, “And you spent $50 million in your own legal fees. Do you need to borrow some money?”
The sketch wrapped up with Nikki referencing her own gaffe. At a New Hampshire town hall, she declined to say “slavery” when asked about the main cause of the Civil War. This time, SNL host Ayo Edebiri asked her, “What caused the Civil War? And do you think it starts with an ‘S’ and ends with ‘lavery’?” Nikki admitted her mistake, saying, “Yes, I probably should have said that the first time.”
And, a “Sixth Sense” reference . . .
Haley now joins an exclusive club of politicians that have appeared in cameos on SNL over the years, including such big names as:
- George McGovern
- George H. W. Bush
- Rudy Giuliani
- John McCain
- Barack Obama
- Hillary Clinton
- Sarah Palin
- Elizabeth Warren, and
- Donald Trump
Haley also delivered the NBC show’s signature line, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!” at the end of the skit. ~ NPR
