There are bad husbands and there are really bad husbands, like 39-year-old Houston lawyer Mason Herring who spiked his wife’s drinks on multiple occasions with a substance used to induce abortions.  On Wednesday, the Texas man got a very light prison sentence of 180 days in the slammer to be followed by 10 years of probation. Herring was originally charged with felony assault to induce abortion – but plea bargained that down to injury to a child, and, assault of a pregnant person.

Catherine Herring, the victim, and soon-to-be former wife in this case, feels like her ex got off too easy.

“I believe this was a flagrant and profound injustice,” she said, describing her husband’s actions as “a wicked act of deception.” ~ New York Times

Background:  Mason Herring’s attempts to end his wife’s pregnancy began in March 2022 and on seven different instances spiked her drinks with an unknown substance.  But according to the Times, in April of 2022, the wife “found packaging in the trash that was labeled ‘Cyrux,’ the brand of an abortion pill sold in Mexico, according to the criminal complaint. The main ingredient in Cyrux is misoprostol, which is used for abortions in some countries.”

In addition to finding evidence of the drug wrappers in the trash, Catherine was also able to provide video evidence gleaned from her home security cameras that showed the husband adding something to her drink and then mixing it up. Catherine Herring testified that due to her former husband’s actions, her now one-year-old daughter was born prematurely, had to spend 117 days during the first nine months of her life in the hospital, and is now experiencing developmental delays.  In addition to the baby he tried to abort, the Herrings have two other children together.

The judge overseeing Mason Herring’s trial ordered Herring to report to the Harris County Jail on March 1 to begin serving his measly 180-day jail term.  For more on Herring and his sentencing, see the video accompanying this article.
