Man who livestreamed his ambush-style assault on unsuspecting cop gets life in prison
On April 3, the Orlando Police Department reported on a macabre event that went down back in 2021 that has now sent a man to prison for the rest of his life.
On September 25, 2021, at approximately 12:40 a.m., two Orlando Police Officers were standing on the corner of Washington and Magnolia as a part of a patrol detail in the downtown area. An eyewitness who was present at the time later informed the police that he was speaking with one of the officers, when a man identified as William McClish suddenly attacked one of the officers without warning – pounding the officer with a brick.
Additional officers responded to the scene, and McClish was secured and taken into custody. It was later determined McClish set up a camera to livestream the attack to Facebook. McClish was 27 years old at the time of his unprovoked and ambush-style attack on the officer.
Following his arrest, McClish faced a litany of criminal charges that included:
- Resisting Officer with Violence,
- Aggravated Battery on LEO with Weapon,
- Depriving Officer of Means of Protection, and,
- Attempted First Degree Murder of LEO with Weapon.
At his trial by jury, McClish’s opening statement was that he didn’t do anything and that the video was tampered with. It took a jury less than an hour to convict him. On April 2, 2024, McClish was found guilty as charged on all counts and the judge overseeing his trial sentenced him to life in prison for his actions.
“The officers who were brutally attacked are lucky to be alive and were able to return to work. We are grateful to the State Attorney’s office and the jury for the outcome that was reached. Now a violent offender will remain behind bars for the rest of his life,” Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith said in a statement. ~ Fox 35 Orlando
