Which industries in America have the most wanted internships?
New research has revealed which industries in America have the most desirable internships, according to hopeful applicants. Business valuation experts at Eton Venture Services analyzed nationwide Google searches made around common internships and industries to determine which people seek out the most, thus naming the most and least desirable.
The information technology (IT) sectorcame at the top of the list, with over 10,000 average monthly searches for internships related to the field across America. An IT internship would mean hands-on experience in tech support, data entry, or coding.
After IT, the next most searched for internships were roles within the arts, entertainment, and recreation industry. There was an average of 8,850 monthly searches made for internships related to this sector. This is a notoriously difficult industry to get into without a step up; so finding internships that can offer that boost is vital.
Construction internships were the next most desirable in the US, with 8,384 average monthly searches. Thousands of people were searching for internships that would give them practical experience in all kinds of construction and building-related jobs.
Next were internships in the healthcare and social assistance sector. People looking for these internships are looking to start careers in care homes, doctor’s offices, as therapists, or many other professions.
There were just over 6,000 monthly searches for the finance and insurance sector, making it the fifth most desirable industry for people looking for internships. This industry includes professions like insurance advisors, underwriters, and accountants.

In 2023, there were reportedly 4.1 million internships across the US, with an average length of 18 weeks (4 months). About 68% of interns go on to be offered a full-time paid role at the company they interned for, though this varies from industry to industry.
When speaking on the findings, Chris Walton, President and CEO of Eton Venture Services said: “There are many reasons why someone might be looking for an internship rather than a full-time, paid position. If you are a recent graduate or a college student looking to spruce up your resume, then internships are a fantastic way to earn some experience in your chosen field.”
“Internships can help you figure out if a job is right for you, without having to fully commit yourself to the position, however, it is vitally important that you make sure you are not going to be exploited or overworked.”
“There are a few key factors that you want to keep in mind when applying for an internship. For example, how much work you will be expected to complete and whether this work compliments or displaces the work of full-time employees. You also want to ensure that the employer understands your prior academic commitments and can accommodate them, to ensure you aren’t stretched too thin.”
