On June 7, the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) announced that its Pompano Beach District Crime Suppression Team arrested 34-year-old Cassius Ali Cooper of Pompano Beach, Florida, in connection with a deplorable case of animal abuse and cruelty.

On Thursday, June 6, following an investigation, BSO deputies say they located Cooper at Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Center and took him into custody as he was attempting to retrieve the dogs he is accused of abusing. According to investigators, on Monday, June 3, BSO detectives responded to an outside storage facility located at 91 N.E. Ninth St. in Pompano Beach after receiving a report of animal abuse.

When they arrived at that Pompano Beach location, detectives reported hearing whimpering and barking coming from a unit. Investigators discovered 10 dogs in distress inside the non-ventilated unit. A foul odor emanated from the unit. There were four dog cages inside.

The first cage had two puppies; the second cage had six puppies; the third cage had one full-grown female dog; and the fourth cage had one full-grown male dog with a heavy metal chain around his neck.

The cages were encrusted with feces and filth. There was no food in the cages and minimal water that was brown, not fresh.

“On the floor of the cages were encrusted feces and filth. As we pulled the dogs from the cages, the smell emanating from them was gag-worthy. Some of the puppies even had feces stuck to their face,” a deputy wrote in the arrest report.  ~ Local 10 News

BSO deputies immediately removed the dogs from the storage unit. Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Center responded to the scene to pick up the dogs and care for them. Deputies began efforts to locate Cooper.

Cooper was booked at BSO’s Main Broward County Jail and is being held on a $10,000 bond.  He faces ten counts of animal cruelty involving torment, animal cruelty resulting in deprivation and mutilation of animals.
