Laurel Lakes man charged in the February shooting murder of 18-year-old

On the morning of August 8, Florida’s Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) announced the arrest of the man suspected in the shooting death of an 18-year-old in Lauderdale Lakes on the evening of February 25. The BSO Homicide Unit has identified the alleged shooter as 23-year-old Jamariel Johnson, who hails from 2840 Somerset Drive in Lauderdale Lakes.

Background:  Shortly before 9 p.m. on Sunday, February 25, Broward County Regional Communications received reports of a shooting in the 3700 block of North Pacific Breeze Circle in Lauderdale Lakes. BSO deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded. After arriving on the scene, deputies located a young man on the ground suffering from gunshot wounds.  Paramedics transported the victim, identified as 18-year-old Decarlo Horton, to Broward Health Medical Center where he died from his injuries. BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units responded to investigate.

During their investigation, detectives were able to identify Jamariel Johnson as the shooter. According to Homicide Detectives, the investigation revealed that the shooting resulted from an OfferUp exchange for the sale of a watch.

On Wednesday, August 7, Johnson was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder with a firearm. Following his arrest, he was transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
