Baltimore man charged with attempted murder after shooting a man and then firing at police
(10:56 am) Just minutes ago, the Baltimore Police Department announced the arrest of a man charged with attempted first and second-degree murder, plus multiple counts of assault and handgun violations in connection with a morning of violence that went down in the Cherry Hill section of Baltimore City this past August. On August 21 at approximately 10:49 a.m., Southern District Patrol officers responded to the 2700 block of Spellman Road for a report of a shooting. Once there, officers found a 33-year-old male suffering from apparent life-threatening gunshot wounds.
Aid was rendered to the injured man until medics responded to the location, transporting the victim to an area hospital for treatment. While on the scene, responding officers were advisedthat their shooting suspect that was still in the area.
When patrol officers located the suspect and gave chase, the suspect turned, produced a firearm, and fired it at officers and an armed security guard. The officer and security guard also returned fire to the suspect. Officers were able to arrest the suspect following a brief foot pursuit.
The 29-year-old suspect was transported to an area hospital for a leg injury. That suspect was later identified as 29-year-old Dontae Johnson of Baltimore. Police investigators confirmed that it was Johnson who shot the 33-year-old male victim in the 2700 block of Spellman Road and also fired his gun at police at security.
Johnson was arrested on the scene and transported to the Central Booking Intake Facility where he was been charged with attempted first and second-degree murder, multiple counts of assault and handgun violations.
