On Wednesday, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced the indictment of Arizona man Jeffrey Michael Kelly for his multiple shootings at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) office in Tempe.  Law enforcement officials in Tempe said that the 60-year-old Kelly fired upon the DNC office on three separate occasions between September 16 and October 6.

Following the third shooting, police had a picture of the as-of-then unidentified shooter’s vehicle and released a photo to the public with the offer of a $1,000 reward.  One witness came forward which ultimately led to Kelly’s arrest, according to ABC News.

Kelly first used a CO2 powered gun, then escalated to firearms for the second and third shootings. Over the course of the three shootings, he fired more than twenty times, causing damage to the building’s windows, front doors, and walls.

The shootings did not cause injuries but highlighted the risk for political violence ahead of Tuesday’s U.S. election. In a statement, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office said a grand jury had charged Kelly on Monday with one count of terrorism and multiple counts of unlawfully discharging a firearm.  ~ Reuters

The grand jury indicted Kelly on the following charges:

  • One count of Terrorism, a Class Two Felony
  • Three counts of Discharge of a Firearm at a Structure, a Class Three Dangerous Felony
  • Three counts of Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm, a Class Six Dangerous Felony, and
  • One count of Criminal Damage, a Class Five Felony.

Back in 2022, Kelly was suspected of stealing Democratic campaign signs in Ahwatukee, using the same vehicle that he was using in the recent DNC shootings.  He was never charged in those sign thefts.

The disgruntled Republican is currently being held on two $500,000 cash-only bonds.
