Teen narrowly misses two people fishing as she crashes her car into the Indian River Lagoon
In the early morning hours of December 22, a young driver that had too much alcohol in her system to be operating a motor vehicle will have a holiday season to remember for the rest of her life – as she could have lost her life as well as potentially seriously injuring innocent bystanders. The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office (IRCSO) reported that early yesterday morning, around 4 a.m., their deputies were called to respond to a crash that occurred at the Oslo boat ramp in Vero Beach.
A vehicle driven by 19-year-old Chanquin Rochester crashed into the water, narrowly missing two fishermen on the dock, who managed to safely jump out of harm’s way. An investigation revealed that Rochester’s breath alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit.
Although Rochester’s car ended up in the river, the teen driver and the those fishing near the ramp are all fortunate to be alive. As the holidays are already upon us, law enforcement agencies across the land are looking out for impaired, aggressive, and distracted drivers, and reminding us about the dangers of drinking and driving.
Drive Sober This Holiday Season! Driving sober saves lives. Alcohol and drugs impair judgment, slow reaction time, and increase the risk of accidents. Always plan for a safe ride home. Call a friend, use a rideshare service, or designate a sober driver. Your choices can make all the difference this holiday season. Stay safe and drive responsibly! ~ IRCSO
Some additional tips to help keep you safe if you’re driving during the holidays:
- Plan for extra travel time.
- Designate your sober driver in advance and give that person your car keys.
- If you’re planning on driving, avoid drinking. Consider using public transportation, call a taxi or use a ride-share service if you don’t have a sober driver.
- Don’t let a friend drive if you think they are impaired.
- If you see someone who you believe is driving impaired, call 911.
- Always buckle up and ensure all passengers in your vehicle are buckled up.Â
- Stay alert and focused. Don’t text, use a cellphone that is not hands-free or drive distracted.
- Move over for all vehicles displaying warning signals. If it is not safe to move over, slow down.Â
