(March 11, 2025)  On Wednesday, Florida’s Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) reported on an inmate at the Duval County jail who is now facing a murder charge after she set a man on fire last year. Officials said that Kimberly Statum,60, was arrested in November 2024 for attempted murder after officers found 67-year-old Lee Payne with severe burns inside a home on Alexandra Drive in the Biscayne area. Payne was rushed to a burn unit in Gainesville for medical care; Statum was detained and arrested at the scene.

Tragically, Payne passed away from his injuries in December 2024; and the Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death a homicide.  The specific motive behind why Statum set Lee Payne on fire has not been documented in any of the available reports regarding this tragic incident.

After presenting the evidence and facts of their investigation to the Florida State Attorney’s Office, officers arrested Statum for Murder and Arson. She remains behind bars at the Duval County Jail.  JSO went on to say that they will continue to work with the State Attorney’s Office on this case to bring justice to Payne’s loved ones.

Law enforcement officials are encouraging anyone with information regarding this case to call them at (904) 630-0500.
