San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York has been suspended for six games and fined $500,000 by the NFL for violating the league’s personal conduct policy following his arrest in Ohio, the league announced Oct. 2.

York, 46, was arrested Aug. 23 in East Palestine, Ohio, during a prostitution investigation. He was initially charged with misdemeanor engaging in prostitution and possessing criminal tools, but the prostitution charge was later amended to disorderly conduct. York pleaded no contest to both offenses, was fined $1,150 and sentenced to one day in jail, with credit for time served.

The NFL said York had already served three games of his suspension by remaining away from the 49ers during the opening three games of the season. He is eligible to return following San Francisco’s Week 6 Monday night game against the Washington Commanders on Oct. 19.

According to court records cited by ESPN and CNN, York responded to an undercover online advertisement and arranged to meet a woman he believed was offering sex for money. Police arrested him at a mobile home community after an investigation involving the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force.

York issued an apology through the team, saying he accepts the NFL’s decision “in full” and takes responsibility for what he called an “inexcusable mistake.” He also apologized to his family, the 49ers organization, players, coaches, employees, fans and partners.

Despite the controversy, York has overseen one of the NFL’s more successful franchises in recent years. He assumed day-to-day control of the 49ers from his parents in 2008 and became the team’s principal owner in 2024. During his leadership, San Francisco has made eight playoff appearances, reached seven NFC Championship Games and played in three Super Bowls.

The punishment mirrors a previous NFL disciplinary action against Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay, who was suspended six games and fined $500,000 in 2014 after pleading guilty to driving while impaired.
