Arizona teacher Brittany Zamora sentenced to 20 years in jail for having sex with 13-year-old student
Yesterday, in a Maricopa County courtroom, former teacher Brittany Zamora, 28, was sentenced to 20 years behind bars after pleading guilty to Sexual Conduct with a Minor, Attempted Molestation of a Child and Public Sexual Indecency in connection to a sexual relationship with a young student.
The former teacher taught sixth-grade at the Las Brisas Academy in Goodyear, Arizona, where the sexual abuse of at least two young victims occurred. She was a graduate of Arizona State University and started her teaching career at Littleton Elementary School in Avondale, Arizona, where she won the 2016 “Teacher of the Year” award.
“Today’s sentencing is fitting for an individual who exploited her position as a teacher to groom and then abuse a young teen student,” said Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery. “Prosecutors and law enforcement will continue to be relentless in making Arizona the most unwelcome place for child sex predators.”
On March 21, 2018 police were alerted by school staff about a sexual relationship between a 13-year-old and his teacher after the victim’s parents found evidence of the relationship on their son’s phone using a parental monitoring app. The parents were also receiving phone calls from their son’s teacher who was trying to convince them not to turn her in to the police.
Investigators learned that Zamora had initially contacted the victim through text messages over a school break and started a sexual relationship soon after. She also had a sexual encounter with the victim at least once at school while another minor was in the room. Reportedly, Zamora asked an 11-year-old boy to stay in the room and watch while she was having sex with her 13-year-old student.
Fox News reported that the former teacher had sex with her 13-year-old student on multiple occasions. With tears in her eyes, Zamora issued a statement to the court prior to being sentenced and also went on to apologize to the court and her victims.
“I am a good and genuine person who made a mistake and regret it deeply. I lived my life respecting and trying to obey every law. I’m not a threat to society by any means.”
The parents of the 13-year-old student who was abused by Zamora wrote a letter to the court asking that she received the maximum jail sentence allowable.
“Now you’ll spend the rest of your youth and most of your adulthood in jail,” the boy’s father wrote in a statement his attorney read in court to Zamora. “My son will grow up, have a good life, get married and have children of his own. I will not allow you to interfere in my son’s life further. Good triumphs over evil.” ~ USA Today
Zamora will receive credit for the 478 days she’s already served in prison. Upon her release, she will serve a life-long probation and will have to register as a sex offender, according to AZ Central. For more on Brittany Zamora’s sentencing, see the video accompanying this article.
