Earlier this morning, the Edna Police Department in Edna, Texas, announced that on Saturday, December 9, an undocumented migrant who officials believe is responsible for the heinous murder of 16-year-old cheerleader Lizbeth Medina, was arrested in Schulenburg, Texas.

ABC News reported that the 16-year-old Medina was supposed to perform along with her cheerleading squad in a Christmas parade in Edna last Tuesday.  When Lizbeth didn’t show up for the parade, her mom went to Lizbeth’s apartment, where she discovered her daughter dead in her bathtub.

Police say that after investing countless hours into Lizbeth’s murder investigation, they were able to identify and locate the man they believe responsible for her death – a man they identified as Rafael Govea Romero.

The Edna Police Department and Texas Rangers traveled to Schulenburg where Romero was placed under arrest for Capital Murder and transported to the Jackson County Jail. Although Romero is apprehended, we recognize Elizabeth‘s family and friends are grieving and will still need support from the community. The citizens of Edna can now sleep in peace. Prior to Romero’s arrest, police yesterday released photos and a physical description of the man they considered to be a person of interest in Lizbeth’s murder.

Lizbeth’s mother, Jacqueline Medina, is understandably brokenhearted over the death of her daughter.  KHOU quoted the grieving mother as saying, “The most horrible way a mother could find her child. She was murdered in cold blood. It should have been a great day because she was involved in the Christmas parade.” Lizbeth was Jacqueline Medina’s only child.

The Medina family has established a GoFundMe account to help with expenses. For more on this tragic story, see the video below.
