Arrest made in shooting murder of Riverdale teen
On April 26, Maryland’s Prince George’s County Police Department announced that the agency’s Homicide Unit identified and charged a man regarding a fatal shooting that occurred in February. Police identified the shooting suspect as 27-year-old Charles Edwards of Hyattsville. Edwards has been charged with the murder of 17-year-old Daiwo Flomo of Riverdale.
Background: On February 11 at approximately 12:40 a.m., officers responded to the 7200 block of Parkwood Street in the town of Landover Hills. Officers located the victim inside of a car suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased on the scene.
The preliminary investigation revealed the shooting occurred at the intersection of Fairwood Road and Parkwood Street just outside the town of Landover Hills. Following the shooting, the victim, who was driving a car, a Kia, drove to the 7200 block of Parkwood Street where he crashed his vehicle.
Court documents alleged Flomo approached Edwards’ car then ran to the Kia when he saw Edwards. Sources say police believe Flomo intended to steal the Hyundai. ~ WJLA
The preliminary investigation revealed that Edwards followed Flomo’s vehicle in order to confront the occupants who had just approached him as he sat in his car. While following Flomo’s car, police say that Edwards opened fire, striking and killing Flomo. The two were not known to each other.
Edwards has been charged with first degree murder and illegally possessing a gun. He’s currently being held at the Department of Corrections without bond, according to ABC-7 News.
Flomo’s family has arranged a GoFundMe campaign to hep cover the teen’s funeral expenses.
