A’s pitcher Jesus Luzardo on the injured list after breaking his finger playing video games
On May 2, the Oakland A’s announced placing their left-handed pitcher, Jesús Luzardo, on the injured list due to a fractured finger on his left hand. The team recalled a substitute lefty, Adam Kolarek, from their alternate site to replace Luzardo on the mound while he heals.
According to ESPN, Luzardo reportedly suffered a break to the pinkie on his left hand – his pitching hand – when he banged his fingers against a table while playing a video game prior to pitching in Saturday’s 8 – 4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.
Suffering some discomfort after that loss, an X-ray revealed a hairline fracture, which placed Luzardo on the 10-day injured list.
“Before the game he was playing a video game and accidentally bumped his hand on the desk as he was playing the game,” Oakland manager Bob Melvin said.
“He came in, was a little bit sore, training staff checked him out. We threw him in the cage before he went out there, watched him warm up. He was comfortable pitching, the training staff was comfortable with him pitching. After the game, we got an X-ray and there was a hairline in the pinkie finger.”
Luzardo pitched three innings and took the loss against the Orioles, allowing six runs — three earned — on five hits.
Leading up to going on the injured list, Luzardo was 1-3 with a 5.79 ERA (18 er in 28.0 ip) with 30 strikeouts and 12 walks in six starts with the A’s this season. He held opponents to a .289 average, including a .280 mark against lefties and .292 against righties.
Replacing Luzardo for the time-being, Adam Kolarek rejoins the A’s after being optioned to the team’s alternate site on April 26. Kolarek was on the A’s Opening Day roster and compiled an 8.44 ERA in eight relief appearances. He allowed a .308 opponents batting average and yielded two home runs in 5.1 innings.
