Police in Howard County are on the case after an Asian woman reported being struck in the face by an unknown assailant while she was walking along a path on the morning of March 22 in Clarksville, Maryland.

The woman, who is in her 50s, contacted police around 3 p.m. yesterday to report that while she was walking on a path near Indian Summer Drive and Summer Sky Path around 7:30 a.m., an unknown man jogged up behind her and struck her in the face as he passed, causing her glasses to fall off and leaving a mark.

She reported that as the man ran away, he repeatedly stated, “I’m sorry I punched you.” The female victim did not require medical attention.

The woman told police the man was a white male in his 20s who she routinely sees walking in the area and may have a developmental disability. She could not provide a clothing description. Police are actively searching for the assailant.

Although investigators have not yet declared this assault as a hate crime or if it was racially motivated, the violent attack has occurred at a time when attacks against Asians are on the rise.

Police are increasing patrols in the area in the search for the suspect. Anyone with information should call police at 410-313-3200.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan visited with Asian American leaders in wake of the Atlanta shootings that targeted Asian spa businesses.
