‘At risk’ monkey stolen from Palm Beach Zoo, Kali needs her meds
(Updated February 13) — On February 11, The Palm Beach Zoo in Florida and the West Palm Beach Police Department both posted requests for assistance from the public to help find “Kali.”
Kali is a 12-year-old Goeldi’s monkey which hails from the South American rainforests. Officials say that the tiny Kali, weighing in at only about one pound, was stolen from the zoo in the middle of the night and that she has special dietary and medical needs.
Police say that Kali was stolen shortly after 1 a.m. on Monday and looks just like the images displayed in this article. Kali is on a special diet and requires anti-inflammatory medicine. WPTV reports that Kali could be worth about $10,000 on the black market.
Naki Carter, a spokesperson and director of marketing and communications for the zoo, said that, “It’s one of our children missing, so tonight we would just like to ask, if someone knows something or saw something, if they would reach out we would be very grateful.”
“Goeldi’s monkeys are very popular on the illegal pet trade, and so since she is a female as far as breeding is concerned, she’s holding a pretty high value, upwards of $10,000 I’ve been told,” Carter said. ~ The Sun Sentinel
Carter went on to say that Kali is microchipped, adding that the monkey thieves “gained access to the monkey’s enclosure by cutting through the mesh in a fence.”
