‘Babe’ actor James Cromwell arrested at Texas A&M University protesting in support of animal rights
Emmy winner and Oscar nominee James Cromwell was arrested today during a PETA protest at Texas A&M University’s (TAMU) Board of Regents meeting while calling on the school to shut down the the laboratory where golden retrievers and other dogs – who were bred to have canine muscular dystrophy – struggle to walk, swallow, and even breathe. Cromwell was arrested as he joined other PETA supporters on campus in protest of the university’s infamous dog laboratory – infamous because this isn’t the first time protestors have gathered at that lab.
The actor was arrested around 1:35 p.m. during a board of regents meeting. He was charged with hindering proceedings by disorderly conduct, said Lt. Bobby Richardson of the department of security and police, Texas A&M University. The charge is a class A misdemeanor. ~ The Hollywood Reporter
Cromwell and another man were taken to the Brazos County Jail and charged with hindering proceedings by disorderly conduct. As of this writing, he’s still being held on a $5,000 bond, according to People.
PETA released a statement from Cromwell, who called on the university to shut down their lab.
“Caging and hurting golden retrievers is unethical and bad science, and it needs to end now,” says Cromwell. “I join PETA in asking that these dogs be released for adoption immediately and spared further misery.”
Cromwell’s activities in support of animals’ rights date back to at least 2013; and he’s been arrested on multiple occasions and at multiple protests trying to protect animals.
Under pressure from 500 physicians, many scientists, people with muscular dystrophy, and PETA, TAMU recently stopped breeding dogs for canine muscular dystrophy experiments – but the university’s experiments continue.
Cromwell is part of a long list of celebrities including Paul McCartney, Richard Linklater, Bill Maher, Lily Tomlin, Ryan Tannehill, Casey Affleck, and Nikki Sixx – who’ve spoken out against TAMU’s dog laboratory.
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on” – opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview.
