On the evening of June 10, officials with the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office in Cumming, Georgia, issued a release stating that they still need the public’s assistance in identifying whoever abandoned a newborn baby in a wooded area of Cumming last week.  The infant was discovered when deputies received a call on June 6 around 10 p.m. regarding a baby that was heard crying near the 1900 block of Daves Creek Road.

The baby was alive, but was found left in a plastic bag in that wooded area, according to The New York Post.  First responders provided medical aid before transporting the baby to a local hospital.

Deputies described the baby initially as a white, newborn, female, later stating that the baby could also be Hispanic.  They immediately issued a release to their Facebook page asking for the public’s assistance in locating the infant’s mother and to please come forward if anyone was familiar with a woman who was in the late stages of pregnancy and may have given birth to this infant.

“It is without doubt a divine intervention this child was found. Had it not been for those observant folks who are our citizens who called 911, we would be having a much different conversation today.” ~ Forsyth County Sheriff Ron Freeman.

Freeman went on to say that the baby was born full-term, most likely only a few hours before she was discovered in the woods.

The Sheriff’s Office said that they’re continuing to follow any and all leads regarding the abandoned newborn, who has since been dubbed “Baby India” by the hospital staff that is now caring for the little girl. Baby India remains in good health at that local area hospital.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office again asked for the public’s assistance in solving this case.

If anyone knows a female who was in the late stages of pregnancy and may have given birth to this infant late last week, please contact the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit at 770-781- 3087 or if you would like to remain anonymous you can call 770.888.7308.

In Georgia, no one ever has to abandon a child.  The Georgia Safe Haven Law stipulates that, “The child’s mother may leave her baby, up to 7 days old, with an employee of any medical facility including any hospital, institutional infirmary, health center or birthing center in Georgia.”
