Homicide detectives in violence-plagued Baltimore worked overtime yesterday after two Sunday cookouts in the city turned deadly – with one killed and eight others injured – when a gunman began firing indiscriminately into a crowd of people. The shooter is still at large.  Police say that when the gunfire ended, the shooter escaped through the crowd on foot.

Police say the shooter was a black male; but Newsweek has reported rumors appearing on social media stating that “the shooter was a white male wearing a white t-shirt and jeans.” Baltimore Police have not mentioned the rumors swirling on-line regarding the possibility of a white shooter.

The Baltimore Sun reported police as saying that they have no motive for the shootings and very little information to share regarding the shooter.

The man killed in the shooting ran towards nearby Perkins Square Baptist Church where he was later discovered. Six other victims — a 58-year-old male, a 51-year-old male, a 29-year-old male, a 27-year-old male, a 30-year-old male and a 30-year-old female — were all taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.  An eighth victim, an adult male, later checked himself into a local hospital with a gunshot to the leg.  ~ Per Newsweek

Newly appointed Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said the shootings occurred just after 5 p.m. yesterday in the 2500 block of Edmondson Avenue in the city’s west side.  Harrison said that he felt the shootings were “extremely targeted” and “very tragic, very cowardly,” according to USA Today.

Harrison said there’s a strong possibility that someone in the crowd may have returned fire and fired at the shooter.

Baltimore’s acting mayor, Bernard C. “Jack” Young, asked that any city residents with any information regarding the shooter contact Baltimore Police.
