Yesterday, detectives with the Baltimore Police Department arrested a man in connection with the alleged shaking death of young Harlem Phillips, a seven-month-old baby girl who died on Christmas Day.

On December 22, 2019, at approximately 10:00 p.m., the baby was taken to Johns Hopkins Pediatrics after having reportedly fallen off a sofa in the 2400 block of Louise Avenue. When Harlem arrived at the hospital that night, she was unconscious and unresponsive.

Hopkins’ medical staff alerted authorities that the baby’s injuries were consistent with that of babies who had been shaken. Detectives from the Baltimore Police Department went to the hospital that night and began their investigation into the child’s injuries.

Tragically, doctors at Johns Hopkins pronounced Harlem Phillips dead on December 25 at 8:31 a.m. The baby’s remains were turned over to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.

Medical Examiners ruled that Harlem died as a result of blunt force trauma.

“Doctors performed the autopsy on December 26,” Baltimore Police Detective Donny Moses said. “Doctors called homicide detectives and told them the baby actually died from blunt force trauma and not as a result of a fall.” ~ CBS News, Baltimore

Baltimore detectives have since arrested Herbert Leon Miller, 24, in connection with Harlem’s death.  According to Fox News in Baltimore, Miller is the boyfriend of the baby’s mother.

Following his arrest, police transported Miller to Baltimore’s Central Booking Intake Facility where he was charged with 1st and 2nd degree child abuse and 1st and 2nd degree assault.

Miller’s trial is set for late January 2020, according to WBAL-TV.

Homicide detectives are asking anyone with information about this incident to call (410) 396-2100 or call Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7lockup.
