Baltimore man charged in brutal murder of 20-year-old Jasmine Morris
The Baltimore Police Department (BPD) reported that on June 12, 2018, at approximately 11:15 a.m., officers were called to the rear of the 2400 block of Westfield Avenue in Baltimore City for a report of an unconscious person. When officers arrived, they found a person not breathing at that location. The person was pronounced deceased a short time later.
Homicide detectives were called to the scene to investigate. There were signs of trauma to the body which was found in a set of bleachers associated with the Reginald F. Lewis High School football field located at that location.
WBAL-TV later reported that the female victim’s body “was found in a pool of blood and her hands were bound with rope.” She was found in a kneeling position and was reported to be found face down in a pool of her own blood. That victim was ultimately identified as 20-year-old Jasmine Morris of Baltimore.
“We are investigating this incident as a homicide. We know that there were two overnight homicides of two female individuals that aren’t related to each other, and aren’t related to this. So, more of a coincidence. We’re just asking people with information to contact our detectives,” said T.J. Smith, spokesman for the Baltimore Police Department.
On June 15, Baltimore Police reported that their detectives arrested 22-year-old Christopher Rather of the 6600 block of Knottwood Court in connection to Morris’ murder. Rather was transported to Central Booking where he was charged with 1st and 2nd degree murder, 1st and 2nd degree assault and reckless endangerment.
In a separate report, police told WBAL that the murder was domestic-related. Rather was reportedly obsessed with his victim. It was revealed via a series of cell phone text messages that Rather lured Morris to the football field. Morris was reportedly dating someone else and was trying to avoid Rather.
Jasmine Morris texted: “Soooo, Chris wanted to talk to me today, right? I’m meeting him at this football field. I think this (going to) be our last conversation. He told me he was leaving, might be going to California or Hawaii. I’mma find out when he get here, but ain’t that good news?” ~ per WBAL-TV
Jasmine Morris was a student at Coppin State University and was employed by Amazon. She was the youngest of seven children.
“She was an angel,” Jasmine Morris’ father, Kimmie Morris told WBAL. “She was well-loved. She was multi-talented. She wrote poems, she stayed very active in the church, and when she went to church, she praised God. She blessed my heart,” Kimmie Morris said.
