Baltimore Orioles announce player development and scouting staffs for 2022 season

On January 26, the Baltimore Orioles announced the club’s player development and scouting staffs for the 2022 season. The coaching staffs of each: Triple-A Norfolk, Double-A Bowie, High-A Aberdeen, and Low-A Delmarva are listed below, along with the Complex League and DSL Orioles.
Buck Britton makes his Triple-A managerial debut with the Norfolk Tides after serving as the manager of the Double-A Bowie Baysox since 2019. Britton led the Baysox to a 149-111 record across his two full seasons with the team, including a Northeast League Championship Series appearance in 2021 and an Eastern League Championship Series appearance in 2019. He made his managerial debut with Class-A Delmarva in 2018, after beginning his coaching career in 2017 as the Hitting Coach for the Shorebirds. Britton played nine seasons in the minors, including seven in the Orioles organization. He will be joined once again by Pitching Coach Justin Ramsey, who enters his fourth season in the Orioles organization and first with Norfolk after spending the last two seasons with the Baysox. In addition to his Pitching Coach position with the Tides, Ramsey has also been promoted to Upper-Level Pitching Coordinator. Hitting Coach Tim Gibbons and Fundamentals Coach Ramón Sambo each return in their roles, with Gibbons entering his second season in Norfolk and third year in the Orioles organization, while Sambo enters his third season in Norfolk and 16th in the Orioles system. Joshua Rodrigues joins Norfolk and the Orioles organization as the Tides Development Coach, having previously worked for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2019. Alan Rail, ATC begins his first year in the organization as Norfolk’s Athletic Trainer. Rail most recently served as the trainer for the Miami Marlins then-Double-A affiliate, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, in 2019 after 15 seasons in the Minnesota Twins organization. Jon Medici will serve as the Tides Strength and Conditioning Coach, a role he held with the Baysox from 2019-21. Adam Sehlmeyer will serve as Norfolk’s Clubhouse Manager.
Kyle Moore makes his Double-A managerial debut with the Bowie Baysox. The 2022 season will mark Moore’s fifth as a manager in the Orioles organization, having most recently skippered the High-A Aberdeen IronBirds in 2021. Moore also served as Aberdeen’s manager from 2017-18, and managed Class-A Delmarva during their historic 90-win season in 2019. He was named the manager of the Class A-Advanced Frederick Keys in November of 2019 prior to the cancellation of the 2020 minor league season due to the pandemic. Pitching Coach Josh Conway also makes the jump to Double-A for his fourth season in the Orioles organization, having most recently served in the same role with Aberdeen. Hitting Coach Branden Becker joins the Baysox coaching staff from the Complex League, while Fundamentals Coach Tim Dejohn has been promoted from High-A Aberdeen. Billy Facteau joins the Baysox as Development Coach after joining the Orioles organization last season as a Technology Coordinator Intern. William Kelly, ATC has been named Bowie’s Athletic Trainer. He joins the Orioles from Nichols College (MA), where he served as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer. Strength and Conditioning Coach Chandler Geller joins the Baysox from the Texas Rangers organization, where he served as Coordinator of Sport Performance Sciences. Jon Weinberg will serve as Bowie’s Clubhouse Manager.
Roberto Mercado makes his professional coaching debut as the Manager of the Aberdeen IronBirds. Mercado joins the Orioles from the high school ranks, having served as Head Baseball Coach at New Britain (CT) High School from 2011-21 and Dean of Students since 2004. He has also had coaching stints in the Cape Cod Baseball League as an assistant coach for the Yarmouth Dennis Red Sox from 2014-21 and as the head coach of the Goodwill Series American team in New Zealand and Australia from 2017-21. Mercado is a graduate of Fitchburg State University (MA). Pitching Coach Forrest Herrmann joins the Orioles from the Cincinnati Reds organization, where he was most recently the pitching coach for the Low-A Daytona Tortugas. Prior to joining the Reds in 2019, Hermann was the pitching strategist for the Seattle Mariners during the 2019 campaign. Hitting Coach Zach Cole enters his first season with the IronBirds and second in the Orioles organization, having served as Development Coach and Minor League Technology Coordinator in 2021.Â
Isaiah Paige joins the IronBirds as Fundamentals Coach. Paige enters the organization from the college ranks, having served as the pitching coach for Dallas College (TX) during the 2021 campaign. Development Coach Ryan Goll returns to the IronBirds for his second year with the team and third with the Orioles organization. Allysse Kramer, ATC will serve as Aberdeen’s Athletic Trainer after spending the past six seasons in the San Diego Padres organization, most recently with the Double-A San Antonio Missions. Strength and Conditioning Coach Mike Thomson joins the IronBirds staff, his second season in the Orioles organization after joining the club in 2021 from Clemson University (SC). Ross Stovall will serve as Aberdeen’s Clubhouse Manager.
Felipe Rojas Alou, Jr. makes his managerial debut with the Class-A Delmarva Shorebirds, marking his 15th year in the organization. Previously, Alou served as the club’s Director of the Dominican Republic Academy. Prior to joining the Orioles, Alou served as Assistant to the Dominican Baseball Commissioner in 2007 (a branch of the MLB Commissioner’s office). Alou played three seasons as an outfielder in the Kansas City Royals organization, spent one season with the Montreal Royales in the only season of the Canadian Baseball League (2003), and played nine seasons for Escogido of the Dominican Winter League. Pitching Coach Joe Haumacher joins the Shorebirds after serving in the same role in the Complex League in 2021, while Hitting Coach Brink Ambler joins the Shorebirds and enters his second season in the organization, after serving as Minor League Technology Coordinator in 2021. Daniel Fajardo will serve as Delmarva’s Fundamentals Coach. Fajardo had an eight-year minor league career from 2012-20, all in the Orioles system, before serving as Minor League Technology Coordinator in the Dominican Republic in 2021. Collin Murray joins the Shorebirds and the Orioles organization as Development Coach. Murray most recently worked for the Detroit Tigers as a Baseball Information Assistant in 2021. After serving as an Athletic Trainer for the Dominican Summer League teams in 2021, Julio Ibarra, ATC joins the Shorebirds in the same role, while Liz Pardo returns for her third season in the Orioles organization and second as Delmarva’s Strength and Conditioning Coach. Tim Cahilellis will serve as Delmarva’s Clubhouse Manager.
Matt Packer and Christian Frias will each make their managerial debuts in the Complex League. Adam Bleday returns as Pitching Coach, joined by Andy Sadoski, who served as one of the DSL Orioles Pitching Coaches in 2021. Also making the jump from the DSL to the Complex League is Hitting Coach Josh Bunselmeyer. Bunselmeyer is joined by Jaylen Ferguson, who played six seasons in Baltimore’s minor league system after he was drafted in 2015. Collin Woody returns as Fundamentals Coach, joined by Baltimore-native Troy Marrow, who worked in the baseball operations department of the San Francisco Giants from 2018-19. Chase Sebby, a former all-conference catcher at Ball State (IN), will serve as Development Coach. Gary Smith, ATC and Sara Padilla, ATC will serve as Athletic Trainers, while Louis Palacios and Sam Sauer will be the Complex League Strength and Conditioning Coaches. Nate Snyder and Mason Gomez will serve as the Complex League Clubhouse Managers.
Elbis Morel returns to manage one Dominican Summer League team, while Chris Madera will manage the other DSL squad. The DSL Orioles Pitching Coaches will be Jake Witt and Dioni Pascual. Julian González and Christian Poulsen will serve as the DSL Hitting Coaches. Miguel Jabalera and Ramón Lubo will serve as the DSL Orioles Fundamentals Coaches. Aliks Lorie, ATC and Brian Bolaños, ATC will serve as the DSL Orioles Athletic Trainers. Julio Diaz and Roman Gomez will serve as the DSL Orioles Strength and Conditioning Coaches.
Overseeing one of the top farm systems in all of baseball are Matt Blood, who enters his third season with the Orioles as Director of Player Development, and Kent Qualls, returning for his 10th season as Director of Minor League Operations. Ramón Alarcón has been promoted to Coordinator of Minor League Operations, and AnaÃma GarcÃa returns for her third season in the organization and first as Coordinator of Intercultural Education. Joe Botelho returns for his second season as the organization’s Coordinator of Technology. Cody Asche joins the Orioles from the Philadelphia Phillies and will serve as the organization’s Upper-Level Hitting Coordinator, while Anthony Villa will serve as Lower-Level Hitting Coordinator. After two seasons as a coach in the Orioles system, Jeff Kunkel has been promoted to Coordinator of Instruction. Anderson Tavárez will serve as Latin American Pitching Supervisor, while Dave Schmidt, in his 25th season in the organization, will serve as Complex Pitching and Rehab Coordinator. Adam Schuck and David Barry will serve as Player Development Analysts for pitching and hitting, respectively, and Jackson Mcdonnell will serve as Player Development Assistant, Complexes. Rancel Rosado will continue to serve as the Orioles Dominican Academy Administrator, with Elvis Fernández as Dominican Republic Facilities Superintendent. Samuel Vega joins the organization as Latin American Field Coordinator. Scott Stansbury joins the Orioles from the Notre Dame Fighting Irish baseball team as Minor League Medical Coordinator, with Aj Cano joining the Orioles from the New York Yankees organization as International Medical Coordinator and Byron Campbell taking over as Minor League Physical Therapist. Nick White returns as Head of Strength and Performance, leading a team of Minor League Strength Coordinator Will Alli, who joins the Orioles from Indiana University; Rehab Strength Coach Brandon Farish; Dietician Alexandra Moses; Sports Science Facilitator Marc Lewis; Biomechanist Joey Mylott; and Kathryn Rowe, who returns for her third season in the organization as Mental Skills Coach. Jake Parker returns as Minor League Equipment Manager for the 13th season.
The scouting department is led by Koby Perez, entering his fourth season as Senior Director of International Scouting; Brad Ciolek, entering his 11th season with the Orioles and first as Director of Draft Operations; and Mike Snyder, entering his 14th year with the Orioles and third as Director of Professional Scouting. Maria Arellano has been named Senior Manager, International Administration, while Chandler Couch has been promoted to Coordinator of Draft Operations after serving as Scouting Fellow in 2021. Hendrik Herz, Alex Tarandek, and Chad Tatum each return as Scouting Analysts. Kevin Carter and Will Robertson return as Pro Scouting Analysts, and will be joined by Ben Maclean, entering his fifth year in the organization and first as a Pro Scouting Analyst. LukeSiler returns as Scouting Analyst Consultant.
The Orioles return Area Scouts Rich Amaral (Huntington Beach, CA), David Blume (Elk Grove, CA), Quincy Boyd (Harrisburg, NC), Ryan Carlson (Chicago, IL), Thom Dreier (The Woodlands, TX), Trent Friedrich (Louisville, KY), Ken Guthrie (Sanger, TX), David Jennings (Spanish Fort, AL), Donovan O’Dowd (Arnold, MD), Jim Richardson (Marlow, OK), Logan Schuemann (Scottsdale, AZ), Brandon Verley (Stuart, FL), and Scott Walter (Manhattan Beach, CA), while adding scouts Dan Drullinger (Brenham, TX) and Eric Robinson (Acworth, GA). John Pierson and Jake Tillinghast will serve as Pro Scouting Consultants.
Internationally, the Orioles are supported in Puerto Rico by returning Scouting Consultant Anibal Zayas, in the Dominican Republic by Latin America Supervisor Gerardo Cabrera, Dominican Republic Scouting Assistant Michael Cruz, and Dominican Scouts Rafael Belén (Santo Domingo), Luis Noel (San Pedro de MacorÃs), and Francisco Rosario (Santiago), and in Venezuela by new scout Oscar Alvarado (Valencia) and returning scout Adel Granadillo (Maracaibo) and Administrative Consultant Scarlett Blanco (Caracas).
