Boxing champ Gervonta Davis arrested on domestic violence charge, weeks before his next scheduled fight
Boxing champ and Baltimore native Gervonta “Tank” Davis was arrested in Parkland, Florida, on Tuesday, December 27 and charged with one count of domestic violence-battery causing bodily harm. Following his arrest, he was transported to Florida’s Broward County Jail
His arrest comes only two weeks after “the two counts of misdemeanor domestic violence-battery charges from February 2020 — from an arrest made after a video showed Davis putting his hands on his girlfriend at a charity event held at the University of Miami — were dropped on Dec. 13.”
Leading up to his arrest, Davis had been training in Miami, getting ready for his January 7, 2023, fight with Hector Luis Garcia, scheduled to take place in Washington D.C. Davis currently holds an impressive 27-0 record with 25 knockouts, according to MSN. As of early this morning the 28-year-old Davis was still being held in in Fort Lauderdale’s Broward County Jail and was scheduled for an 8 a.m. court hearing today. No word as of this writing on whether any bond has been set.
Davis also is set to appear in Baltimore Circuit Court on Feb. 16 for his alleged involvement in an unrelated hit-and-run incident in November 2020, according to court records. Davis is accused of fleeing the scene of an accident that involved four people, including a pregnant woman. He is facing 14 charges, including failure to immediately return and remain at the scene of an accident involving bodily injury. He also is facing a civil suit. ~ ESPN
In his prior 2020 domestic violence arrest, charges which have since been dropped, Davis could be seen on video grabbing his ex-girlfriend around the throat at a charity basketball game at the University of Miami. Davis and the woman have a child together. A video of the abuse made its way to social media, leading to Davis’ simple battery domestic violence arrest a few days later. According to The New York Post, his ex-girlfriend suffered injuries to her lip and jaw after Davis roughed her up.
CBS News in Baltimore reports that Davis has held multiple world championships in three weight classes, including:
- the WBA lightweight title since 2019;
- the IBF super featherweight title in 2017;
- the WBA (Super) super featherweight title twice between 2018 and 2021; and
- the WBA (Regular) super lightweight title in 2021.
