Braves starting pitcher Huascar Ynoa breaks pitching hand after punching dugout bench
In an anger-management, lesson hopefully learned moment, a pitcher with the Atlanta Braves has gone on the disabled list after losing his cool, punching a bench in the dugout, and breaking his hand. Braves’ starter Huascar Ynoa, 22, went on the injured list on May 17; and he may be out of the rotation for several months, according to Sports Illustrated.
And although the Braves are minimizing the injury per their recent tweet, those in the know are saying that his injury will keep him sidelined for a minimum of two months. The right-handed pitcher suffered that injury to his right hand after punching a bench in the Braves’ dugout.
Ynoa hurt himself after losing to the Brewers on Sunday.
Ynoa was angry after allowing five runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings Sunday against the Brewers, and that anger will now cause him to miss an extended period. He’s unlikely to return before the All-Star break. ~ CBS Sports
“It’s a shame,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said Monday, according to The Athletic. “Probably nobody that feels any worse than him,” as quoted by MSN. During the team’s flight returning to Atlanta, Snitker said that his pitcher was complaining about the pain in his hand. “I knew he had done it and it was sore, but in the flight it started bothering him more,” Snitker said Monday. “They checked this morning and it was a fracture. It’s a shame.”
MSN went on to report the good news about Ynoa leading up to the pitcher’s anger meltdown, reminding readers that earlier this month he shut out the Washington Nationals for seven innings and also hit a grand slam to propel the Braves to a 6-1 win. And as pitchers in the National League also have to swing a bat, Ynoa is boasting a .353 batting average that includes two home runs.
Ynoa was also enjoying a stellar season on the mound prior to his injury. In his eight starts, he had earned himself a 3.02 ERA. After pitching 44 2/3 innings, he struck out 50 batters resulting in a 27.9 percent strikeout rate, with a corresponding walk rate of 6.1 percent.
In addition to calling up Santana, the Braves also recalled pitcher Tucker Davidson who should have a place for now in the rotation.
