Yesterday, Florida’s Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) reported that on December 30 around 4:50 p.m., their Emergency Operations Center received a 9-1-1 call reporting a resident at an adult living facility in the Hillendale Cares Adult Living Facility had discharged a firearm at a vehicle driving away from the facility.  Deputies responded to the Hillendale Cares facility located at 27357 Frampton Avenue in Brooksville, where they located the suspect, 20-year-old Mckenzi Finn, who was immediately taken into custody.

Deputies spoke to the facility manager who advised Finn got angry when the facility’s bus driver told Finn he would not be able to drive him to the store. The driver advised Finn that he was already committed to transporting another resident.

The facility manager further told investigators that Finn was redirected by staff to clean his room while they attempted to find alternate transportation options. A short time later, as the bus driver was leaving the facility, Finn exited from the garage area with a firearm and fired the gun three times in the direction of the bus.

The driver, who saw Finn discharge the firearm, stopped the vehicle on Cortez Boulevard to check if he’d been injured or if the vehicle was damaged. The driver wasn’t injured, and no damage was visible on the vehicle. Finn proceeded to run back into the facility following the shooting.

A search warrant was executed at the facility where detectives located a firearm hidden in the ceiling of a common-area bathroom. Ammunition was also located in Finn’s bedroom. Finn, a convicted felon with a lengthy criminal history, was arrested on charges including:

  • Aggravated Assault (two counts,)
  • Discharging a Firearm in Public,
  • Tampering with Evidence,
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and
  • Possession of Ammunition by a Convicted Felon.

Finn was transported to the Hernando County Detention Center where he is being held in lieu of a $26,000 bond.
