On Thanksgiving Day, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) reported receiving a call on November 21, just before 3:30 p.m., regarding a suspicious person near a business on Cortez Boulevard, on the east side of the county.  The caller stated they saw what appeared to be a dead body near the back of a dead-end road, and a strong, foul odor was present in the area.

The 911 caller told deputies they discovered a body in the back of a dead-end road behind the Dollar General.  Fire officials confirmed the body was “in the early stages of decomposition.” ~ WFLA

Multiple units from the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office and Hernando County Fire Rescue immediately responded to the scene. A Hernando County Fire Rescue Captain confirmed the individual in question was deceased and in the early stages of decomposition. It was reported that the victim appeared to have been a victim of homicidal violence.

Hernando County Sheriff’s Office Major Case detectives and Forensic Science technicians, along with the medical examiner, then responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. The identity of the decedent was quickly confirmed; and a person of interest was identified and subsequently located for questioning.

Within 10 hours of the initial call for service, the suspect, identified as 53-year-old R. W. Resca Jr., confessed to murdering the victim and also confessed to disposing of the body.

Resca Jr. was placed under arrest, charged with 2nd Degree Homicide and transported to the Hernando County Detention Center where he is being held without bond. The Sheriff’s Office announced that this homicide was an isolated incident, domestic in nature, and that there is and was no threat to the community.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office will not be releasing the victim’s identity, as it is protected under Marsy’s Law.
