Broward County Deputy jailed on multiple counts of physically abusing girlfriend
Earlier this week, Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) Special Victims Unit arrested one of their own, a BSO Detention Deputy, on charges of aggravated battery and domestic battery. The Sheriff’s Office announced that on Monday, April 7, at approximately 7:20 a.m., their office received a call regarding a domestic disturbance that had gone down in Dania Beach.
Deputies responded and made contact with 30-year-old David Powell, who advised that he and the adult female victim had a verbal altercation. Powell is a detention deputy with BSO that had been on the job since December 6, 2021.
After speaking with the female victim, BSO detectives learned that Powell physically abused her. Their ensuing investigation revealed that Powell forcefully slapped the woman in the face and ear causing her to lose hearing in the ear – and he beat her multiple times with a belt.
Examination at an area hospital showed that she suffered significant injuries requiring hospitalization.
During the investigation, Powell’s victim disclosed additional past incidents of physical violence by Powell dating back to March 2024. That investigation resulted in additional charges against Powell. In all, Powell faces three counts of aggravated battery, one count of felony battery and four counts of domestic battery.
Powell was taken into custody and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
A risk protection order was completed on Powell, and deputies confiscated several firearms from the residence.
“Domestic violence is never acceptable. This is a serious issue that devastates the safety and wellbeing of individuals and families. Whenever anyone in this community, including employees of this agency, break the law, they will be held accountable for their actions,” Broward Sheriff Dr. Gregory Tony said.
“I want victims of domestic violence to know that they are not alone. If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, call 911 for help.”
Powell is currently on administrative leave without pay.
