Bucks Co. man indicted on charges that left lady Capitol cop with concussion during insurrection
Yet another indictment related to the breach of the U.S. Capitol on January 6 was handed down this week, this time charging a Pennsylvania man from Bucks County with crimes against the government. That historic insurrection on the Capitol disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress that was in the process of ascertaining and counting the electoral votes related to the presidential election.
Ryan Samsel, 37, of Levittown, was indicted on August 25 on federal offenses that include:
- assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers;
- engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds;
- carrying out an act of physical violence in the Capitol grounds; and
- obstruction of an official proceeding.
Charging documents state that Samsel was observed on video footage walking toward barricades manned by uniformed Capitol Police officers protecting the Capitol building, which was in session, and that he “immediately became confrontational.”
Samsel removed his jacket and placed his red hat on backward in a manner suggesting he “was preparing for a physical altercation,” pulled on the barricades until the crowd had pushed it upon a Capitol Police officer identified in the document as O-1, who hit her head on the stairs behind her, causing her to lose consciousness. ~ UPI
According to Levittown.com, Samsel, “has been jailed since his late January local arrest by federal authorities for taking part in the insurrection in Washington D.C. He has bounced between jails, tried to return to custody in Pennsylvania, and reportedly was badly attacked in one correctional facility.”
An arraignment date on his indictment has not yet been set in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
In addition to the charges brought against him for his part in the Capitol riot, Samsel has a violent criminal history dating back to at least 2006.
Thus far, over the seven months since January 6, more than 570 individuals have been arrested in nearly all 50 states for crimes related to the breach of the U.S. Capitol – including over 170 individuals charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement.
The investigation into the January 6 breach of the U.S. Capitol remains ongoing.
