At about 9:30 a.m. on Sunday over Labor Day Weekend, a friend of 26-year-old Emma Mumper went to the Mumpers’ home at 2609 S. Olcott Blvd. in Bloomington, Indiana, to pick up her friend. After knocking on the door and calling her friend for 45 minutes, she used a key to enter the residence. She found Emma dead in her bedroom, and dialed 9-1-1.

It would soon be revealed that the rest of Emma’s family members were also inside the home – and all would be found dead from gunshot wounds.

On September 8, The New York Post reported that it was the father of the family, 61-year-old Jeffrey Mumper who fatally shot his wife, 54-year-old Annamarie.  Police said that the father also shot and killed his daughter Emma, 26, and his son Jakob, 18, before turning the gun on himself earlier that same Sunday morning. Friends of the family said that Jeffrey had survived a previous bout of prostate cancer, but was now fighting pancreatic cancer, news station WTHR reported

Police said evidence at the scene indicated that Jeffrey shot his family before taking his own life in the apparent murder-suicide. Fox News reported that autopsies for the family members are scheduled to take place today in Terre Haute.

Emma was a graduate student at Stony Brook University in New York, according to WTHR. Her university bio reads:

I am currently a graduate student in the Clinical Psychology program at Stony Brook University. I earned my BS in Psychology at Indiana University. My research interests include the temperamental and environmental factors that contribute to the etiology of mood and anxiety disorders during childhood.

Swimming World Magazine reported that Jakob was a rising senior swimmer at Bloomington North High School, where he was 18th in both the 50 (21.24) & 100 freestyle (46.86) at the 2020 IHSAA state championships. Reportedly, the avid swimmer helped his 200-freestyle relay team place 13th at the state meet as he anchored in a 20.76. He also anchored the 400 free relay team to finish 22nd.

A family friend and close friend of Jakob, identified as Joe T., said, “I felt they were like my second parents, to be honest,” said Joe. “I loved his dad. I loved his mom. His mom was actually trying to become a teacher. So, she drove a school bus to become a teacher,” according to WTHR.

Police in Bloomington say that the investigation into the murder-suicide is still active and ongoing.  They have no motive to share for the dad’s actions.
