Charlie Rose fired from CBS less than 24 hours after sexual harassment allegations surface
(Updated) Veteran news journalist and talk show host Charlie Rose is the latest personality to come under fire facing allegations of sexual harassment. On November 20, The Washington Post reported that at least eight women came forward to accuse the 75-year-old of a variety of sexual indiscretions and unwanted sexual advances which included “lewd phone calls, walking around naked in their presence, or groping their breasts, buttocks or genital areas.” As of yesterday, Rose was suspended from his PBS and CBS news. On November 21, TMZ reported that CBS just went ahead and fired Rose.
CBS had undertaken an internal investigation into the allegations surrounding Rose’s misconduct and decided not to waste any time jettisoning him. The Los Angeles Times shared a statement issued by CBS News President David Rhodes, which read, “A short time ago we terminated Charlie Rose’s employment with CBS News, effective immediately. This followed the revelation yesterday of extremely disturbing and intolerable behavior said to have revolved around his PBS program. Despite Charlie’s important journalistic contribution to our news division, there is absolutely nothing more important, in this or any organization, than ensuring a safe, professional workplace — a supportive environment where people feel they can do their best work. We need to be such a place.”
Rhodes went on to say “I’m deeply disappointed and angry that people were victimized.” CBS has not yet named anyone to replace Rose as co-anchor on “CBS This Morning.” CBS News affiliate WDBJ-7 reported on November 21 that PBS and Bloomberg also fired Rose amid his sexual misconduct accusations. Not too long after his firings were reported, additional women began coming forward to accuse Rose of sexual improprieties.
Not too long after the Washington Post article surfaced, Rose posted a statement on Twitter apologizing for his behavior. His full post reads:
