Class of 2020 college grads looking at a robust job market
Employers believe soon-to-be new college graduates will find a welcoming job market, according to results of a recent survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). Survey results were released on December 12.
Nearly half of employers polled for NACE’s Job Outlook 2020 survey rate the job market for the Class of 2020 as “very good” and nearly 10 percent deem it “excellent.” (See Figure 1.)
Employers indicate that the students they are seeking in this college job market are those who:
- Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher;
- Can provide evidence of their problem-solving skills and ability to work as part of a team; and
- Have a strong work ethic.
Employers also said that students who have internship experience have a decided edge in a competitive market.
(Figure 1: Employers Rate the Job Market for 2019-20 Graduates)
Year | Excellent | Very Good | Good | Fair | Poor |
2019-20 | 9.8% | 48.2% | 34.8% | 7.1% | 0.0% |
Employers taking part in the Job Outlook 2020 have tempered their hiring plans for new college graduates as they plan to hire 5.8 percent more new college graduates from the Class of 2020 than they did from the Class of 2019 for positions in the United States
Data for the Job Outlook 2020 survey were collected from August 1, 2019, through September 30, 2019. This year’s data collection not only surveyed 905 NACE employer members, but also 2,229 employer organizations that were nonmembers.
