Cold case heats up: Cops release sketch of suspect who killed a Florida mom and shot her son
Nearly three years ago, a mother was shot and killed and her son sustained gunshot wounds in their North Lauderdale home. Since that heinous double-shooting, Florida’s Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives have been working to try and identify the shooter. On January 15, the BSO was bringing heat to this cold case and released a composite sketch of the murder suspect.
Around 12:30 a.m. on March 28, 2016, deputies from the BSO North Lauderdale district and North Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to 1165 Cove Lake Road in reference to a medical incident. Candice McKinney, 35, was discovered dead at the scene. Her 18-year-old son, Kareem Barnett, was found shot and transported by helicopter to Broward Health North. McKinney’s second child was found unharmed in the apartment.
The male suspect is described as being 30 to 40 years old, about 6 feet tall and roughly 215 lbs. The day of the shooting, he had a scruffy beard and low haircut. Homicide detectives suspect he may have had help.
Anyone with information is asked to call Homicide Sgt. Kevin Forsberg at 954-321-4279. Reports can also be made anonymously to Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477) or online at browardcrimestoppers.org.
Crime Stoppers will pay up to $3,000 for the anonymous tip that leads to an arrest.
