Cops searching for murderers of Edgewood man, 71, found beaten to death in his home
On February 18, patrol deputies with Harford County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 2300 block of Perry Avenue in Edgewood, Maryland, for the report of a person having a heart attack. Upon arrival, deputies located a male victim in his home; but he was already dead.  Deputies identified the deceased man as 71-year-old Gerald Wayne Champ.
Officials on the scene quickly surmised that Champ had been assaulted and killed.
Detectives canvased the area and searched for video evidence around Perry Court in an effort to identify any witnesses, suspects, and/or a motive in the case. Investigators from the Forensic Services Unit responded to the area to collect and preserve physical evidence in support of the investigation.
Mr. Champ’s body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy where it was determined he died from trauma to the upper body. Investigation indicates Mr. Champ was murdered and that he died some time between February 14 and when his body was found on February 18.
The Sheriff’s Office reiterated that although they were called to the scene on February 18, Mr. Champ was already dead when deputies arrived at his Edgewood home.
Over the weekend, detectives conducted multiple interviews and pursued a number of leads. The investigation has led detectives to believe that this is an isolated incident.
Detectives determined during the initial stages of the investigation that the victim’s faded grey 2003 Ford Explorer with MD registration – 09680HT had been stolen from the residence, possibly by those involved in the homicide. See the picture of Mr. Champ’s missing vehicle below.
