Earlier this month, James Dunn, a disabled 32-year-old man from Cocoa, Florida, struggled in the murky waters of a retention pond and drowned while five teenagers recorded the event and mocked and cursed at the man as he died. The cold-hearted teens posted the video on social media where it was discovered by Dunn’s family who informed police in Brevard County.  Dunn’s badly decomposed and heavily tattooed body was discovered in the pond on July 12 – three days after he drowned and two days after he was reported missing by his fiancé.

On July 20, Fox News shared some of the audio from teens’ video.  Fox reported:  “Get out the water, you gonna die,” yells one, while another yells, “ain’t nobody fixing to help you, you dumb (expletive).” As Dunn disappears under the water, one of the teens says, “Oh, he just died.”

Police in Florida investigating Dunn’s death said that none of the teens, described as all being between 14 – 16 years of age, did anything to assist Dunn as he drowned; nor did any of them contact 911 to report the drowning. Fox quoted Cocoa Police Department spokesperson Yvonne Martinez as saying that the videotape recorded the teen observers laughing at Dunn as he drowned: “He was just screaming … for someone to help him.” Police were successful in identifying and then later interrogating those callus teen voyeurs. Investigators said that the teens showed no remorse for their inactions during Dunn’s drowning or for posting the tape to social media.

Dunn left behind two young daughters and was described by family members as being a very giving man.  Regarding his death and the videotape, Dunn’s sister told Florida Today that, “My brother is disabled and walks with a cane…please make it make sense to me.”  The minute-long video of Dunn’s drowning, described by police as being “extremely disturbing,” was released by the Brevard County State Attorney’s Office and posted online by Florida Today.

On July 21, USA Today reported that police in Cocoa want to bring charges against the teens who witnessed Dunn’s drowning and who not only did nothing to help, but laughed at and mocked him while he struggled to survive. Unfortunately, the best authorities can come up with now are “misdemeanor charges under a Florida statute related to not reporting a death.”  The final decision whether or not to charge the teens will be decided by the State Attorney’s Office. Please be forewarned that the video below is very disturbing.
