Ace News Today - Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness Week: Tips for navigating the holidays with IBD
The CDC reports an estimated high number of 3.1 million people in the U.S. with a prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

For those living with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, the holidays can present unique challenges. From rich meals to travel stress, the season’s festivities may impact symptoms or disrupt routines. In honor of Crohn’s & Colitis Awareness Week in December, our friends at Gastroenterology of Greater Orlando are sharing some practical tips to navigate the holidays while managing your IBD while still enjoying the season.

Planning Ahead is Key:   Preparation can make all the difference when navigating holiday events. If you’re attending a gathering, consider reaching out to the host beforehand to inquire about the menu. Offering to bring a dish that suits your dietary needs is a thoughtful way to ensure you have a safe option while contributing to the celebration. When traveling, pack an emergency kit with your essentials: medications, wet wipes, and non-perishable, IBD-friendly snacks like rice cakes or applesauce can make all the difference.

Mindful Eating During Holiday Meals:  Holiday spreads are often loaded with rich, high-fat, or spicy dishes that can trigger IBD symptoms. Focus on simple, gut-friendly options like lean proteins, cooked vegetables, and gluten-free grains if needed. Avoid overeating, as larger meals can strain digestion.

Eating slowly and practicing portion control are crucial. Savor your food while giving your digestive system time to process. If alcohol is served, remember that while moderate consumption may be tolerable for some, it’s important to listen to your body and avoid triggers.

Managing Stress and Fatigue:  The holidays can be stressful, and stress is a known aggravator of IBD. Prioritize self-care by incorporating relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga into your routine. Don’t hesitate to set boundaries if you feel overwhelmed by commitments. Getting enough rest is equally important. Fatigue is a common symptom of IBD, and overextending yourself can worsen it. Schedule downtime to recharge and focus on what truly matters during the holidays.

Connecting with Support:  You don’t have to navigate the holidays alone. Lean on your support network, whether it’s family, friends, or a local Crohn’s and Colitis support group. Sharing your experiences and concerns can provide relief and practical advice.

If you’re newly diagnosed or struggling to manage symptoms, reaching out to a healthcare provider is essential. They can offer tailored recommendations to help you stay comfortable and healthy through the season.

Living with IBD means making adjustments, but it doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the joy of the holidays. Focus on activities that bring happiness, whether it’s spending time with loved ones, enjoying lighthearted traditions, or reflecting on the positive moments of the year.

By planning thoughtfully and listening to your body, you can navigate the holidays with confidence. The professionals at Gastroenterology of Greater Orlando are here to support you in managing IBD through every season.

“Together, we can make this holiday season one of health, happiness, and connection”
