Yesterday, it was being widely reported that a 30-year-old Detroit mother was taken into custody, “after the decomposing body of her 3-year-old son was found Friday morning in a basement freezer in the family’s westside Detroit home.”  That mom also had five other children living in her Detroit home where the local police and agents with Detroit’s Child Protective Services discovered the body in the freezer while conducting a welfare check at the home.

CBS News in Detroit reported that it was not yet known how or when the boy died or how long his body had been in the freezer. Police Chief James White with the Detroit PD told reporters that, “This case has shocked me, shocked our investigators.”

“But the discovery would not have been possible without the officers’ intuition. When they talked to the occupant of the home they recognized there was something not right about the conversation and the way this occupant was communicating with them. Initially, the conversation was just to push the officers away as if there was nothing going on.”

The officers on the scene, suspicious of the mother’s behavior,  contacted a supervisor and later found the body in the freezer, White added.  Also yesterday, White provided a live update regarding the investigation and discovery of the child found dead inside a home in the 12700 block of Monte Vista early last Friday morning.

“We’re getting support for the officers,” he said. “That’s something that no one should have to see. The other kids that were in the home, just imagine what they must have gone through and what they must have endured being inside of that home.”

“There is no indication, at this time, what they knew,” White added.  ~ ABC News

The other five children living at the home are now in the care of Child Protective Services.  The police described the living conditions inside the home as “poor.”

The child’s body is being turned over to the coroner’s office to try to determine the manner and cause of death.  Police have not yet released the mother’s name.  But Fox News in Detroit reported that the dead child’s name is “Chase,” he was blind, and that Child Protective Services had been called to check out the living conditions at the home on numerous occasions.
