Sheriff Kevin Rambosk with Florida’s Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) praised the life-saving actions of his department’s deputies who rescued a five-year-old girl who was attacked by a pack of dogs in Golden Gate Estates in East Naples on Thursday evening.  “These deputies acted quickly to deliver this girl to safety,” Sheriff Rambosk said. “Their intervention likely saved her life.”

Around 7 p.m. on the evening of October 6, deputies responded to a residence on Smith Road in response to a 911 caller who said a child had been seriously injured in a dog attack. The caller cautioned dispatchers the dogs would likely attack deputies when they arrived.

When Sgt. Kurt Miller arrived at the residence, he observed six or seven dogs in the fenced-in yard. The victim was also behind the fence; she was sitting up and Sgt. Miller could see she had blood on her stomach. An adult female was walking around the driveway trying to coax the dogs out of the yard.  ~ CCSO

Sgt. Anna Marie DeRosa and Cpl. Jacob Walker were near the fence in the driveway.

Sgt. Miller yelled for the woman to pick up the victim and carry her out of the yard because the dogs didn’t appear aggressive toward her. The woman picked up the child and began carrying her. As the child got closer to deputies the severity of her injuries came into focus. The woman began losing her grip on the child and had to set her down.

Several of the dogs started to circle around the woman and the victim. One of the dogs tried to nip at the victim. Cpl. Walker was shooting the dogs with his pepper ball gun to keep them away from the girl, while Sgt. DeRosa had her firearm out.

Sgt. Miller then rushed into the yard, grabbed the young victim and ran her out to waiting paramedics.

The child’s injuries were extensive: She had a large amount of tissue missing from the back of her right leg, causing a majority of the femur to be visible. She also had bite wounds to her stomach and lacerations to her back among other injuries.

The child was transported by ambulance to Physicians Regional Medical Center-Collier Boulevard where she was then flown by medical helicopter to Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers and later flown to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg.

Collier County Domestic Animal Services responded and initiated a report.
