Drunken Florida man leads deputies on a high-speed chase driving wrong way on I-95
The early morning hours of Wednesday, June 15, was not the timeframe to be driving on I-95 in Martin County, Florida, especially when drunken 26-year-old Darian Curbelo of Stuart was zooming along the Interstate going the wrong way around 1:30 a.m. Deputies say that although he was driving in the wrong direction against oncoming traffic – Curbelo did not want to stop, and he led Deputies on a heart-pounding pursuit while driving his vehicle at high rates of speed.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) released a dashcam video of the death-defying incident showing Curbelo driving northbound in the southbound lanes of I-95. That video shows Curbelo narrowly missing an oncoming motorist.
Deputies reported that they were concerned that Curbelo would eventually seriously injure or kill someone. They went on to say that they did everything they could to stop him, risking their own lives tin the process.
At one point Curbelo drove into a rest area, and as deputy vehicles approached the car, Curbelo drove towards them head on.
MCSO was able to keep Curbelo on the shoulder, then box him in bringing the car to a stop.
Deputies arrested the wrong way driver and charged him with fleeing and eluding, reckless driving and DUI.
Curbelo’s blood-alcohol level was nearly three times over the legal limit.
