Hiring and wages for internships are both expected to increase this year, according to a new report from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).  NACE’s employer members responding to the 2018 Internship & Co-op Survey expect intern hiring to grow by 1.7 percent this year. (See Figure 1.)

Also this year, intern wages reached an average hourly rate of $18.73, which is up 67 cents or 3.7 percent from last year’s rate. This continues a trend as wages for bachelor’s degree-level interns have been on the rise since 2013. The nominal increase in hourly wages for interns over the past five years is 15.5 percent (from $16.21 to $18.73 per hour). (See Figure 2.)

For 2018, the fields of study that have the highest average hourly rate for bachelor’s-level interns are computer science ($21.01), engineering ($20.92), math/statistics ($20.46), and health science/nursing ($20.13).

2018 Internship & Co-op Survey was conducted from November 8, 2017, to March 2, 2018, from NACE employer members; there were 309 respondents representing 29.1 percent of all eligible respondents.  An executive summary from NACE’s 2018 Internship & Co-op Survey report is available at www.naceweb.org/research/reports/.
