On September 11, the family of Henderson County, North Carolina, Deputy Ryan Hendrix along with Henderson County Sheriff Lowell Griffin, announced the very tragic news that Deputy Ryan Hendrix, 35, gave his life on September 10 when he was shot by a suspect in an early-morning car burglary and shooting incident.

Deputy Hendrix was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Sheriff’s Office for 8 years. He is survived by his two children, a loving fiancée and many others in an extended family who are mourning the loss of a young man gone too soon.

As we honor all our heroes and fellow Americans who lost their lives on 9/11, my prayers are also in Henderson County today, grieving another law enforcement officer who laid down his life in service to his community. ~ Sheriff Lowell Griffin, September 11, 2020

Being an organ donor, Hendrix, even in death, will continue to exemplify the heart of a public servant. He will be helping strangers over the course of their lifetimes, even after making his own ultimate sacrifice.

Ryan’s family wants everyone to know that “Ryan was doing the job he was born to do and he died doing the job he loved”.

On the morning of 9/10/2020 while the rest of the world slept, Hendrix responded to a call assisting a family in need. While on the scene, he was fired upon and fatally wounded.

The patrol vehicle of Ryan Hendrix has been parked outside the Law Enforcement center as a memorial to the heroic deputy. The Sheriff’s Office has invited “everyone” to visit this memorial.

Thank you to those who have already left flowers, notes of encouragement, and most importantly have stopped at the patrol vehicle and said a prayer for his family. We are all hurting right now and the support from this amazing community means so much to us!!!

The Sheriff’s Office has partnered with the North Carolina Police Benevolent Association (PBF) to set up a memorial fund for Hendrix.  100% of the money received by the PBF in the Deputy Ryan Hendrix memorial fund will go to the Hendrix family.
