False bomb threat on school bus lands student, 11, cuffed, arrested and charged with a felony
On the morning of January 10, a thoughtless school prank turned serious when an 11-year-old student riding in his school bus on his way to school in Volusia County, Florida, jumped up from his seat and yelled that another student riding the bus had a bomb in his backpack.
The bus driver did the responsible thing and immediately reported the threat, which transported an entire shift of deputies and additional units responding to the area of Oxford Drive and Lorraine Drive in Deltona where the bus pulled over. Staff from Deltona Middle School and Volusia County Schools also responded to the scene.
The bus was cleared of students and swept for explosives or firearms; but there were none.
There was no bomb; and the 11-year-old identified as student Aiden Brown, was arrested on felony charges of making a false report of a bomb (a felony) and disrupting a school function.
The youngster later admitted he made up the bomb threat and never had any reason to believe there was ever a bomb on the bus. Through interviews with Aiden, other students, and a review of video surveillance footage, deputies confirmed he repeatedly knowingly shouted a false report of a bomb.
Aiden was transported to the Volusia Family Resource Center for processing on his criminal charges.
The Volusia Sheriff ‘s Office has asked parents “to share the message that poor decisions have consequences, as seen in this video and as promised by Sheriff Mike Chitwood.”
