Fatal car crash in Woodlawn claims the lives of mother and young son
A mother and her nine-year-old son were killed in a single vehicle crash in Woodlawn, Maryland, on the evening of February 21. The mother’s five-year-old daughter, also in the vehicle at the time of the crash, is hospitalized in critical condition.
The preliminary police investigation indicates that the mother, identified as Tanja Tanesha Shields, 29, of the 5500 block of Wesley Avenue in the Woodlawn section of Baltimore City, was driving her 2017 Nissan Altima westbound on Gwynn Oak Avenue approaching Park Drive around 11:05 p.m. when she lost control of the vehicle. The Nissan drove onto a raised median separating the directions of travel, struck a tree in the median, and caught fire. Witnesses at the scene were able to remove the occupants from the Nissan.
All three occupants were transported to area hospitals where Tanja Shields and her nine-year-old son, Khalil M. Wyche, were pronounced dead. Shields’ five-year-old daughter remains hospitalized in critical condition.
A neighbor told WBAL-TV 11 she heard a loud boom, looked out her window and saw the car. She then called 911. As she went outside, the car caught fire. A man tried to pull the children out as she ran back in to get blankets.
None of the occupants of the vehicle were restrained by seatbelts or car seats at the time of the crash. The Baltimore County Police Crash Investigation Team will be working to determine any additional factors that may have contributed to this fatal crash.
